| A warped marudai with a few sample braids |
|
There are two swap exchanges per year, with samples due on March 31, and September 30. Participation in the exchanges is expected but not required. Members may elect to "sit out" a swap at their discretion. Each swap has a general theme or topic which may or may not have specific requirements. Within that context, members have considerable creative latitude, however, samples must be created using a marudai. The number of bobbins used is generally optional. For each swap, an individual member will make approximately ten samples. These are to be mailed to the group coordinator PRIOR to the due date. One sample is designated for the CW library and one will be photocopied and then put into a library back-up. Participants will receive a packet with approximately eight sample braids from others in the group. These will be accompanied by detailed notes as to technique, fiber content, etc. Depending on the number of participants for that particular sample exchange, the group will have been divided into two or more subgroups. So in addition to the actual samples, everyone will receive a color copy page with braids from each of the other subgroups and their associated notes. Any braider that wishes to receive more samples can make another set of ten samples using different materials or methods and thus be included in a second subgroup. This group communicates via e-mail and snail mail, and occasionally even by telephone. Please contact the chair for further information. |
